The Metaphor of the Crystal and the Cloth
A crystal is a traditional metaphor for the mind—it reflects the color of whatever cloth it’s put upon. In the same way, the mind takes on qualities from whatever environment we are in. But the mind is ultimately free from color…it is clear, full of wisdom and compassion. Nothing can stain it.
During these glorious days of Spring a crystal mala reflects the colors of all the flowers. And in Summer it will reflect those colors of intense blue and gold. In Fall it will show the colors of muted sunsets and falling leaves. And in Winter it will shine with the frost and snow, or if you live in the Southwestern U.S., blowing grasses in the warm breezes of Santa Anas.
